FAQS

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is an inflammatory condition that affects the gumline. This inflammation is caused by the bacteria commonly found in plaque. Inflammation is one of the tools your body uses to try and fight bacteria and viruses. In short durations, inflammation can be protective, but when inflammation becomes chronic, like with periodontal disease, it can do more harm than good, and can be the catalyst for plaque formation in the artery walls. If left untreated, periodontal disease can have a serious negative impact on a patient’s oral health and overall well-being.

What are the Symptoms of Periodontal Disease?

Some common symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Red, swollen gums
  • Gums that feel sensitive
  • Pus found between teeth near the gumline
  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Teeth that feel loose in the mouth
  • A receding gumline

If you experience any of these symptoms, you may want to visit our Nashville office for testing and diagnosis to determine if you have periodontal disease.

How Can Periodontal Disease Affect Me?

Periodontal disease can have a serious negative impact on your oral and overall health if the disease is not treated. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and the bacteria that causes gum disease has been linked to heart disease, strokes, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, pregnancy issues and more.

How Many People are Affected by Periodontal Disease?

If you have periodontal disease, you are not alone. The CDC released a study, the largest study on periodontal disease ever done, in 2012 stating that 50% of adults over age 30 have periodontal disease, an advanced form of gum disease. At our practice, we strive to do our part to help lower that number and help our patients avoid developing periodontal disease at any stage.
